In a recent report by the Health and Safely Executive, it turns out that employers consider age to be less important than their experience and ability. However, there was evidence to believe young workers are more likely to sustain an injury because of lack of training, experience, awareness of occupational risks, inadequate supervision and possible lack of physical and/or psychological maturity.
There were misperceptions found regarding the health and safety precautions that need to be made for young workers when they enter the workplace. There was also some evidence to believe that some employers hide behind health and safety, and insurance as an excuse not to employer young people.
This just seems to add to the growing list of problems for our younger generation when job searching. Not only do they have to worry about having the right amount of experience with the correct qualifications when they have just left full time education. They now have other potential obstacles to avoid!
