Rogue Landlords in the North West
100, 000 renters could be victims of rogue landlords in the North West according to a recent survey done by Shelter and YouGov. This revealed that renters are being harassed, threatened and assaulted, utilities cut off and their homes entered by rogue landlords.
In the last year the Shelter hotline was called 17, 000 times regarding landlords. The housing charity have said that renters are often unaware of their rights and don’t know where to go for support or advice. It’s these people who are having their lives made a misery by a small minority of rogue landlords in the North West.
Victims have come forward to tell their experiences, and one renter explained that he was assaulted by his landlord after coming into problems with him shortly after moving into their property.
The victim “Chris” stated the property was damp and had a leaky roof for months. There wasn’t even a gas safety certificate. He counted 18 repairs that were in need, but the landlord refused to carry out most of them.
It was later established that the building was at risk of collapse and the renters wanted the problem sorting or court action would commence. This lead to further problems…
The landlord began intimidating the occupiers by entering the property without permission. He became aggressive and even threw rocks at them.
The Shelter urges anyone who thinks they are a victim of rogue landlords to contact them for advice.
