Marcy Borders, whose photograph became one of the iconic images for the 9/11 attacks has died of stomach cancer at the age of 42.
The picture was taken of Ms Borders by Stan Honda of Agence France Presse as she fled the attack. She was diagnosed in 2014 and believed the toxic dust inhalation to be the cause of the cancer.
Even though doctors and researchers can’t make a direct link between the illness and the attacks, hundreds of people have been diagnosed with cancers since the tragedy.
In 2014, 3 fire fighters died of cancer on the same day. All had worked on Ground Zero and many believe the cancer to be linked to the terrorist attacks in 2001.
Although it is difficult to draw significant conclusion, the rescue workers and responders to the attack have a disproportionate number of cancer cases compared to the general population.
There have been reports over the years showing a concerning number of cancer cases in those who helped in the rescue efforts of 9/11. Mostly, Leukaemia, Myeloma, Thyroid and prostate cancer.
It seems that even though the 9/11 attacks were 14 years ago, victims are still suffering to this day.
